Image Resolution

The image resolution is normally stated in pixels. However, what defines the physical size of any image you have as a download is in which format you would like to reproduce the image and therefore the dpi (dots per inch) required. 

For example, to use an image on a website, 72dpi is optimal. However, to print in medium quality, 150dpi (minimum) is required. That said, for the best print quality, and that used by most commercial printers, then 300dpi is needed.

To put this in some perspective, an image of 2000x2000 pixels would give the following sizes.....

At 72dpi this would be 27.7 x 27.7 inches (705 x 705 mm)

At 150dpi this would be 13.3 x 13.3 inches (338 x 338 mm)

At 300dpi this would be 6.7 x 6.7 inches (169 x 169 mm)

Therefore, as a general rule (in dimensional terms), and a quick reference guide, each 1000 pixels is equal to 

13.8 inches (352.7 mm) at 72dpi 

or 

6.66 inches (169.3 mm) at 150dpi 

or 

3.33 inches (84.6 mm) at 300dpi.

This bold image stood out from others available due to the interesting use of colours and the way they appear as waves, angled across the canvas. At first glance, the appearance is almost one of layers of different coloured viscous liquids, randomly flowing over each other. This picture from a royalty free and copyright free source, makes great use of many shades of the colour purple with added layers of white with a hint of contrasting greens.     

The overall effect is one of  a surrealistic abstract style with bold complimentary colours.

This striking picture from a royalty free and copyright free source was an interesting image that stood out from some of the others available due to the bold use of colours and the way they appear to have been applied, with a wide brush in places. At first glance, the application looks totally random, yet on closer inspection, the upper background uses the sweeping brush strokes, in contrast to the more detailed and colourful foreground to the art work concentrated around the purple, reds and blues     

The overall effect is one of  a surrealistic abstract style with bold complimentary colours.

Often, in the case of wall art, it is not always a necessity to have a piece that is bold, different or original. Sometimes a print of one of your favourite paintings, or a print from an artist whose work you enjoy is exactly what you are looking for. To this end, I came across a fantastic source of original art, digitally enhanced by rawpixel from a public domain* collection. 

Sunflowers (1888) by Vincent Van Gogh is such an example, and another one of my particular favourites. For this piece of wall art, before you download, please note that I have further enhanced the image and layered slightly, and be aware that some resizing and cropping may have occurred (and that you may need to adjust to fit your print medium).

Vincent Van Gogh

This public domain art, Sunflowers (1888), is a high resolution digitally enhanced copy of an original painting from the most famous Dutch Post-impressionist painter of all time, Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853–1890). Vincent struggled with mental illness throughout his short career and painted most of his most famous artwork such as 'Sunflowers' and 'Starry Night' during the final few years of his life. 

Van Gogh inspired early abstraction, Expressionism and Fauvism. His vivid paintings were not widely appreciated until after his death, but now are among the most expensive paintings ever sold.

Pierre Auguste Renoir

This high resolution digitally enhanced original painting, Bouquet of Roses (Le Bouquet de roses) (1882), is from one of the most highly regarded French Impressionist painters, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919). 

The young Renoir struggled with his family’s financial circumstances so he left music school and started out as an apprentice at a porcelain factory. While he studied art in Paris, he befriended the young impressionist painters: Frédéric Bazille, Claude Monet, and Alfred Sisley. In the 1870s, Renoir became one of the leading painters in the Impressionism movement.

Buildings | Cinemas | Dark | Free Artwork | Graphic Style

For me, it is not very often that I like to use any text in wall art, as normally a clear image is better as a focal point. A picture paints a thousand words, you might say. However, in this case, it is the words themselves that say it all. 

When I came across this excellent image (and thanks to Edwin Hooper) from a free to use licensed source, I loved the idea. Obviously, it is The World Cinema which is temporarily closed, but with a little bit of dark humour, it is easy to make the small leap to it being the Earth which is temporarily closed, which in these dark economic and environmental times is not such a leap! With a little layering and filtering, I quite liked the idea of adding a darker graphic effect to enhance the message, with the minimal amount of colour adding to the overall gloomy outlook.

A few months ago, while looking for an image on a royalty and copyright free source for a silhouette type, black and grey project that I was working on, I came upon this stunningly simple close-up portrait face of a young man that stood out. Although I didn't use it in that project, I returned to the image some time later, working towards this bold, sharp, earthy, impressionistic effect, by substituting the intense black silhouette look with greens, browns and yellows.
